There are several ways to close of bottle of wine. Let's take the screw-top, for example. It's practical, easy and reclosable but not very wine or eco-friendly. The classical and genuine cork plug stays the most common way to seal a bottle of wine. It's natural and it's been used for ages. There's also some ingenious inventions that are being used to close the bottle when it's not empty (yet). Now, there's a new item that can be added to the list: the Select Bio cork.
The Select Bio cork is Normacorc's latest product. This company is one of the most important manufacturer of wine closures in the world. Having produced enough corks to reach the moon and back (that is more than 20 billion) for 5,000 wineries in 40 countries, they are experts, to say the least. Their newest innovation is a cork that looks and feels like the traditional one but it's actually completely different.
The Select Bio is made from renewable plant-based materials derived from... sugar cane. It's fully recyclable and scores a zero carbon footprint. Even better: the cork releases the perfect amount of oxygen needed for the wine to achieve the expected vinification, hence it prevents spoilage and waste related to wine fault. Waitrose is the first supermarket chain in the UK to launch the Select Bio amongst its range of wine. More precisely, the recyclable cork is reaching the shelves this week on top of the Cubist Pablo Old Vine Garnacha 2013 bottles, an award-winning premium wine from Spain. Time to say “¡Salud!”, then.
