This incredible project is called Waste Less, Save More and has been launched last week by Sainsbury's, a company apparently determined to reduce food wasting as much as possible: an average family in the UK throws away the equivalent of £700 of food every year. That's 7 million tonnes of food and drink for the whole country. Sainsbury's Waste Less, Save More is a five year plan, divided into three main phases: Committing £10 million over five years to tackle household food waste and more, Will spend £1 million transforming one UK town as a test bed for innovation in 2016, Will develop and share findings with other communities in subsequent years.
The company is looking for a town, city or borough counting 15,000 to 300,000 inhabitants and a Sainsbury's location within a 5 mile radius. The selected municipality will be given a £1 million investment to test the various initiatives to fight food waste, including fridge innovations for the home to track when food is beginning to go off, talking bins that give tips as rubbish is put in them or new packaging to keep products fresher for longer. If you're interested in nominating your community, you have until Friday 30th October to apply. The town selected to become the Waste Less, Save More “pilot” will be announced on December 1st, 2015.
