Like its partner, Coca-Cola, with its secret soda recipe, for years, McDonald's has avoided divulging the recipe of its Big Mac sauce. However, the firm has just put one of the 200 numbered 500 ml bottles up for auction on the Australian Ebay site. The starting price is $23,100 (around ?15,900), with the profits going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia foundation, to support sick children and their families. As a Ronald McDonald foundation is implanted in most of the countries in which the company is located, it is probable that some of the 200 bottles will be put up for auction in other countries.
In parallel, the ailing brand has launched a marketing campaign throughout the country, distributing mini 25 mL versions, in return for a tweet with the hashtag #macitbetter. It didn't take much for a black market to start on Ebay, where the small pots can be found on their singly or in boxes of 200 for $220. The campaign is also accompanied by two video clips, on its Facebook page, in which McDo mixes its Big Mac sauce with unusual flavours (strawberry ice cream, oysters, toast...), claiming that "everything is better when it tastes of a Big Mac".
