Macsween is certainly the reference when it comes to Scottish traditional food. Founded in Edinburgh in the 1950's, this family company offers a wide range of gourmet produces based on haggis, Scotland's national dish. Scottish poet Robert Burns made haggis a Scottish speciality, with a poem called Address to a Haggis. He died in 1796 and to celebrate his memory, his friends gathered on the fifth anniversary of his death to share a supper including haggis. This launched a tradition which has been known as Burns Night or Burns Supper ever since, usually held on or near 25 January, the poet's birthday.
This is therefore the perfect timing for Macsween to introduce their new haggis meatballs, a world's first, according to the company. "As consumer tastes have evolved, so have our products" said Managing Director James Macsween. "With each new development we strive to demonstrate the versatility of this much loved and traditional taste of Scotland. Our new Highlander meatballs offer a fusion of flavours that can be enjoyed all year round. So, whether you’re a haggis aficionado or a novice, this is a product that can be enjoyed by everyone." Retailers include Tesco since the end of December and Asda from January 14. A pack of 12 Macsween Highlander Meatballs costs £2.
