"JumpFromPaper" gives life to handbags in 2D

Created by the Taiwanese designer duo, Chay Su and Rika Lin, the handbag brand, "JumpFromPaper" is based on a surprising concept. Whilst they look like 2D cartoons, they can carry books, tablet computers and other treasures.

Launched in 2010, the Taiwanese brand, "JumpFromPaper" manufactures amusing and somewhat surprising objects. Whilst the creations from designers, Chay Su and Rika Lin, seem like 2D drawings on paper, they are real handbags in canvas and polyester.  With a cartoon aspect and a quirky style, these optical illusions with straps are available from pouches to backpacks. Whilst the capacity of their pockets is nothing like those of Mary Poppins' model, they are sufficient to hold a telephone, a tablet computer, books (thin ones) or magazines.

However, a zip on some models lets you enlarge the central pocket to hold more stuff. Whilst they have been all the rage in Asia and the USA for more than three years, the brand is just starting to move into Europe. On the other side of the Atlantic, "JumpFromPaper" bags are even sold in the stores of some art centres, such as the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and the MOMA design store in New York. In the UK, only the Saatchi Gallery in London distributes the collection, outside of the brand's on-line store.

On the price side, you'll need to spend between 70 and 100 euros (around 60 to 80 pounds) for a handbag or shoulder bag. Backpacks are 100 euros (around 80 pounds), whilst computer pockets are sold at 70 euros (around 60 pounds). But the brand has also launched its creations as small purses (15 euros or around 12 pounds) and pockets (30 euros or around 25 pounds).
