But Nottingham Council are looking to stem this and have just granted planning permission for an imaginative transformation for one empty property in Aspley.
The property in Beechdale Road had formerly been home to the flower shop Forget-Me-Notts Florist but has been empty since February 2017 following their closure.
The planning permission authorises the conversion of the 35 square metre property from a flower shop into a café. Full details have not been given about the proposed café but the plans and new signage at the shopfront give some hints about the menu which will include popular items such as bacon sarnies, milkshakes, fresh coffee and breakfast served all day. The applicant, Rob Long on behalf of Telecom Rentals UK Limited, will apparently be bringing four employees in to run the café. No other details, such as opening hours have been given and a date has not been set yet for the completion of the transformation and for the new café to officially start trading.
The proposed new business has been well received in Nottingham with the local councillor, Mohammed Saghir, welcoming the news that an empty business was being filled and stating that this would be very beneficial for the area. He added that the whole area had seen a lot of new shops and buildings recently and that it was especially pleasing to see local businesses taking over empty properties instead of large national chains.
The Sheriff of Nottingham, Glyn Jenkins has also spoken in favour of the new café and said that it could be particularly helpful for the elderly population in that area by providing them with a meeting place locally that they could visit. He wished the new venture every success in the future.
