Asda and Tesco's low diesel prices

Energy/Transport

Last week, Asda and Tesco squeezed down the price of diesel to 97.7p per litre, the lowest price for over six years, to reflect the fall of global oil cost.

Global oil prices have been declining lately and since the beginning of December, crude prices decreased by 30%. Asda was the first to react last Friday, when the company lowered its diesel prices to 97.7p per litre at all its petrol stations in the UK just before the week-end, unleaded remaining at 99.7ppl. Asda already made the cut on unleaded price per litre last November and set it just below £1. "We’re delighted to be the first retailer to take diesel to its lowest price level in over six years" explains Andy Peake, Asda’s Senior Petrol Director, "this latest announcement shows that we’re committed to being the driving force behind lowering fuel prices across the UK regardless of where you live."

Tesco was quick to react and displayed the exact same prices at its 500 service stations across the country only hours later. "We know our customers really value low fuel prices and having diesel for 97.7p a litre will give our customers a big helping hand. This reduction will mean millions of customers save money by shopping at Tesco" said Fuel Director for Tesco Peter Cattell. Paying less is always good news but, as reported in the news, campaigners regret that these price reductions do not reflect the low oil prices. Simon Williams, RAC fuel spokesman, even think that “a further cut of between 1p and 2p could be introduced within the next 14 days”.
