Are more Lidl stores coming to Kent?

Food/Health

Lidl have been a major success in the UK over the last few years and, along with Aldi, have mounted a major challenge to the traditional British supermarkets by offering widespread discount prices throughout their range of products.

It now appears that Lidl will be extending their market by making a large increase in the number of their supermarkets in the county of Kent.

Plans have already been submitted for two new Kent Lidl stores to be opened in Edenbridge and in Herne Bay. The Edenbridge supermarket is expected to open in the summer of 2019 with the creation of 95 new jobs. In addition to this, Lidl have listed 20 other towns in Kent where they are actively looking for suitable sites to open new Lidl supermarkets.

The towns, which are listed on the Lidl website as site requirements, include Rochester, Dover, Isle of Sheppey and Chatham. Lidl have stated that the new sites would need to have good access to the major public transport links and be able to be easily accessed by both motorists and pedestrians. The new sites need to be prominent but can be based either in towns or out of town as long as there is a strong traffic or pedestrian flow to that area. Lidl appear to be quite flexible in their plans and have stated that they will consider converting existing buildings, creating standalone new stores or building new stores to form part of a new retail park.

The Lidl website states that the company are looking to double the number of supermarkets that they currently have in the UK in order to build on their "phenomenal" growth. They are asking for property developers to contact them with suitable leasehold or freehold properties. It appears that the discount supermarket chain is looking for suitable new properties across the whole of the UK so their proposed expansion into Kent may only be the start of a widespread growth programme for Lidl.
