Telephoning or replying to an sms is dangerous when driving a car, and these practices are causing more and more accidents. But despite this, Apple has just announced that it is moving into the automobile market with its CarPlay software. This system allows the owner of an iPhone 5, 5S or 5C, with a Lightning port, to connect his telephone to his car's interface. Thus, the mobile phone functions most used for travel in a vehicle become controllable by voice, with the simple touch of a finger or using wheel controls.
CarPlay was designed from a blank page to provide drivers with an incredible experience when they use their iPhone in a car. iPhone users always want their content to hand, and CarPlay lets them use their iPhone in their car with as little distraction as possible, explains Greg Joswiak, Vice-President and Marketing Manager for iPhone.
Thus, the Siri voice recognition assistant reads text messages and can take dictation of replies. It can also make a call, pick up the phone on request or guide the user, step by step, in the Plans navigation application. Beyond voice control, the mechanism integrated in participating vehicles also links some of the functions to the wheel controls, without creating interference. In addition, CarPlay makes other Apple or partner products available, such as iTunes, Spotify or iHeartRadio.
On the marketing side, Apple is counting on the presentation of its new product at the Geneva Motor Show next Thursday. There, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will demonstrate their new models integrating the interface and Apple system.
In its press release, Apple also states that "other car makers will gradually integrate CarPlay, including BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citröen, Suburu, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp".
