The city of Preston is situated right on the north bank of the River Ribble and serves as the administrative center for Lancashire. The city has a limited history, and while roman roads did cross through what is now known as Preston, it did not have any sort of substantial settlement until 1086. However, the city did expand quickly, becoming the wealthiest town in all of England by 1218. The city remained part of the local district though and did not become an officially acknowledged city until 2002.

In terms of economy, the British defense aerospace industry calls Preston home. BAE Systems and other military based corporations are based out of Preston as well. Military aircraft design and manufacturing takes place within the city and Warton, a neighboring village. However, there are other industries that call Preston home, including Westinghouse Electric Company, the parts distribution company Alstom and several other industrial manufacturing corporations. With the city's location as a major transportation hub (it sits right in the middle of the M6, M55, M65 and M61), it makes sense to have the manufacturing facilities here. In terms of shopping, most shopping takes place at Fishergate, which serves as the main district for shoppers in the city of over 100,000 residents.
