Glasgow is Scotland’s most populated city with about 558,000 inhabitants. It lies south of Scotland’s center and the estimated population is about 3,000 per km squared. It is located on River Clyde’s banks in West Central Scotland. The name of the city comes from the Bryhonic glas cu, which means green hollow and is often represented in a romantic manner as the dear green place. The inhabitants fondly refer to themselves as “Glesga”. Glasgow is a city steeped in history, which goes back to the Roman Empire times when a wall was once erected to separate the Celts and Picts in Caledonia from the Roman Britannia. Until today, the wall is still visible. Glasgow attained its city status in about the 12th century when a cathedral was built.

The heart of the city is the George Square, which houses most of Glasgow’s public statues. The main shopping centers are St. Enoch Centre and Buchanan Galleries. Glasgow is probably the second city to London as the most important shopping city in London. Some of the most famous shopping streets include Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street and Argyle Street. Another famous location for shopping is the Merchant City, which is a residential and commercial district located to the east.
