The city of Portsmouth is one of the oldest settlements in all of the United Kingdom. Peopled called the region home long before the Roman Empire and while there are no exact dates for establishment, Winston Churchill stated the city of Portsmouth was first founded in 501 by a pirate named Port. However, historical documentation regarding this is lacking, and many other people believe the city to have a beginning point around 1180. The city is the second largest in the county of Hampshire and is located right on the southern coast of England. It is also the only island city of all of the United Kingdom.

The majority of city workers clock in at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, as the shipping industry is the largest in the city. Construction of boats and other seafaring vessels is performed at the Naval Dockyard, including two Queen Elizabeth aircraft carriers.

Beyond boat construction, there are other major employment and economic offerings in Portsmouth. This includes the European headquarters of IBM, plus the United Kingdom's headquarters of the Zurich Financial Services company. Independent and boutique shops have also started to spring up in the last several decades, making it an excellent location for business startups at the Gunwharf Quays Shopping District.
